Beginning of Autumn (立秋, Lìqiū)
As the Chinese solar calendar enters Beginning of Autumn (立秋, Lìqiū) on August 7, 2026, many people are surprised that the weather still feels like midsummer. This is perfectly normal. In traditional Chinese understanding, Lìqiū marks the beginning of a seasonal transition rather than an immediate change in temperature. In many regions, especially those with humid climates, several weeks of lingering heat—often called the "autumn tiger" (秋老虎)—may follow.
During this period, the body's energy is gradually shifting from the outward, active nature of summer toward the quieter rhythm of autumn. Even though the air remains hot and humid, it is wise to begin adjusting daily habits. Stay well hydrated by drinking water regularly throughout the day. Fresh seasonal fruits such as pears, peaches, grapes, and melons provide both fluids and vitamins. At the same time, avoid consuming excessive iced drinks, which may temporarily cool the body but can upset digestion according to traditional Chinese medicine.
Choose lighter meals that include plenty of vegetables, whole grains, fish, tofu, and lean proteins. Reduce overly greasy, spicy, or fried foods, as they can contribute to internal heat and fatigue during humid weather. Continue to exercise, but avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the afternoon. Walking in the early morning or after sunset, swimming, tai chi, yoga, or gentle cycling are excellent choices.
Quality sleep is especially important as the seasons change. Aim for a consistent bedtime, keep your bedroom cool and well-ventilated, and allow your body adequate time to recover from the day's heat. If possible, spend a few minutes outdoors each morning to enjoy natural light and help regulate your body's internal clock.
Finally, remember that seasonal transitions affect both body and mind. Take time each day to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the subtle signs of the coming autumn—even if the thermometer still says summer. By gradually adapting your diet, exercise, sleep, and daily routine, you can support your immune system, maintain your energy, and enter the new season with greater balance, resilience, and well-being.
Wishing you and your family good health and happiness as we welcome the Beginning of Autumn. May this season bring you peace, balance, and renewed energy.
